Introduce you child to music at an early age
Introducing music to children at a young age is invaluable. We are all surrounded by music in our lives today, with constant sounds coming from radios and TVs throughout the day, not to mention music playing in every shop and restaurant we enter. Hence children are already living in a world full of music and sound. TV shows made for younger viewers generally have wonderful music incorporated into the whole fabric of the show. Music is used as a learning device for the message of the overall show or that particular episode. Kids quickly learn to put words to music once their favorite TV character has been singing at them from the screen!
Taking general music exposure to a higher level can be extremely beneficial at an early age. All children seem musical when they are very young, as they instinctively move to music and try to sing along. Therefore it can be difficult to assess if your child is particularly musical or not. But this really is irrelevant when considering sending your child to music lessons. All children will benefit, regardless of the level of natural ability involved, and those who are particularly musical will get the chance to develop their talent and experience things at a deeper level. As with all the arts, different people can enjoy the same experience, even though they may understand or appreciate it at widely different levels.
Pre-instrumental classes, or general music classes particularly designed as the introductory experience a child will have with formal music education, are a great way to start. Music needs to be fun from day one. Group classes allow kids experience music in a more relaxed setting while they make friends and have fun. There is no need to send any budding musician to individual lessons from a young age. Frequently this only puts undue pressure on a child, and takes a lot of the fun out of discovering music and what you can do with it.
General group classes for children will introduce music both from a pitch and a rhythmic perspective. All children develop differently, and while some may be just happy keeping the beat with a simple drum, others may be fine at singing entire songs with good pitch. Lessons will teach these skills and above all it will make music an enjoyable experience. At the end of the day we are not all going to be talented or full-time musicians. Very few children go on to study music through individual lessons and even fewer will make music their life’s work. Therefore is it vitally important that we allow children to appreciate and love music from early life. Huge enjoyment can be got from having a good general knowledge and understanding of music, and being involved in music as a hobby at an amateur level is a fabulous way to make friends and enjoy yourself.
Find out what music classes are available in your area for young children. See what approach this teacher has to continuing music education as your child gets older – are there other group classes on offer or will your child be able to specialize; should they show the talent and interest to do so? Be sure to get a teacher that ultimately is great working with children. There are plenty of talented music teachers in the world, but you need to find one that is also going to be as passionate about teaching small children. Then hopefully you will be entering your child into the wonderful world of music and opening their ears to one of the greatest pleasures of life!
